We want to help make sure tradies and contractors working on or around our electricity network – and our employees, customers and the wider community – are safe around electricity.

- Important info to help you stay safe when working near overhead power lines and pole-mounted equipment

Look up before tipping a load, picking up a ladder, operating machinery (like a crane, digger or other MEWP), or tree trimming because overhead power lines might be closer than you think.
Electricity can ‘jump’ through the air, so you don’t even need to touch a power line to get
seriously hurt – or worse. That’s why safe is a 4 metre word. It’s the minimum safe distance to
keep from our power lines and other equipment. Getting too close risks electric shock, power
cuts and project delays.
If you want to work closer than 4 metres, talk to us about a close approach consent.
The New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice for Electrical Safe Distances (ECP34) sets out the minimum approach distance requirements for overhead power line installations and other works associated with the supply of electricity.
These distances are set to protect people, property, vehicles and mobile plant from harm or damage from electrical hazards.
As your local lines company we want to keep you and your crew safe.
