Road closures for electricity upgrades along SH1, Central Dunedin

26 February 2026
Local lines company Aurora Energy is about to start electricity upgrades on Cumberland Street (State Highway 1) in Central Dunedin.

This project will run from mid-March to mid-April and involves working on underground infrastructure outside the Victoria Hotel to improve network reliability.

To complete the work safely, temporary overnight road closures and traffic management will be required at the intersection of Cumberland Street (SH1 northbound) and St Andrew Street on two dates:

  • On Friday 20 March, the left-hand lane turning onto St Andrew St and the adjacent straight-through lane will be closed. One straight-through lane will remain open.
  • On Tuesday 24 March, the right-hand lane turning onto St Andrew St and the adjacent straight-through lane will be closed. One straight-through lane will remain open.

To minimise the impact and disruption on both dates, the work will take place overnight from 7pm to 6am.

There will be increased vehicle activity in the area during this time, and traffic management will be in place. Aurora Energy asks people to allow extra travel time and to follow all traffic management signs and instructions, and thanks customers for their patience while this important work is carried out.
