Kaikorai Valley and surrounding communities to benefit from new underground electricity cable
04 February 2026The 3.15 km 33 kV cable will stretch from the Kaikorai Valley zone substation (on Stone Street, Kenmure) to Transpower’s Halfway Bush grid exit point yard (on Wakari Road, Halfway Bush).
This project will improve the security of electricity supply for more than 3,300 customers in Kaikorai Valley, Brockville, Kenmure, Mornington, and Belleknowes, who are supplied by the Kaikorai Valley zone substation.
The project began in January and will be completed late-May.
“To minimise the impact on customers and avoid extra disruptions, we have worked closely with our contractor KB Contractors Ltd to align our project schedule with other work underway in the area,” said Aurora Energy General Manager Service Delivery Richard Starkey.
No planned power outages are needed to complete this work, however there will be some street closures and traffic management required.
“We ask all customers to factor in additional travel time and be prepared for delays. We have been in touch with landowners who will be directly impacted by this work, and will continue to keep them updated as the project progresses,” Mr Starkey said.
Aurora Energy thanks the community for their goodwill and patience as they undertake this important network upgrade as quickly and safely as possible.
The Kaikorai Valley to Halfway Bush cable project is part of Aurora Energy’s wider $560 million investment programme across Dunedin, Central Otago/Wānaka, and Queenstown.
