Green Island Community to benefit from electricity substation upgrade
15 January 2026This provides a significant boost to the reliability and resilience of the electricity network for more than 4,300 customers in the wider Green Island community, from Concord to Ocean View.
Aurora Energy General Manager Service Delivery Richard Starkey said the project marks an important milestone. “We’re proud to have delivered this upgrade, which will help future-proof the network and support the changing energy needs of our customers, including meeting higher electricity demand expected in the future from the growing uptake of electric vehicles and new technologies.
“We want to thank both the nearby residents and wider community for their support and patience throughout the project,” said Mr Starkey. “Their understanding has played a key role in helping us deliver this important upgrade safely and efficiently.”
The substation upgrade involved constructing a new substation building, transformer area and driveways, followed by installing and commissioning new electrical equipment. The substation site has also been raised to help mitigate potential risks such as a 100-year flood event from the nearby Kaikorai Stream.
The Green Island zone substation upgrade is part of Aurora Energy’s wider $560 million investment programme across Dunedin, Central Otago/Wānaka, and Queenstown.
