Our load management system
What is load management and why is it needed?
By encouraging people to shift their use of electricity to off-peak times, we can reduce the pressure on the network. This means we may be able to reduce capital investment and, over the longer time, the lines charges to our customers.
Other benefits include:
- Reducing peak load pressure on Transpower’s substations so they can reduce their charges
- Managing the demand on the Aurora Energy network when we’re fixing faults
By letting customers know about higher-priced control periods, you can change when you use high-demand appliances like heaters, hot water.
How does Aurora Energy manage load at times of peak demand?
- Transferring storage heating loads (water heating, under-floor heating and night-store heating) to less expensive tariff periods
- Providing energy tariff options to electricity retailers

This document provides information on the Load Management System operated by Aurora Energy Limited. This information is generally provided for use by electricity retailers, and their metering equipment providers and contractors.
Large customer demand
We offer a demand management programme for our industrial and large commercial customers connected to the Aurora Energy network.
If you’re part of this programme you’ll get access to:
- Network control forecasts to help you plan to avoid network peaks
- Monthly performance reports in kilowatts and dollars saved
This helps industrial and commercial customers with connection capacities of 150kVA+ manage their demand on our network at peak times.
Control period status
Here is the current status of peak control hours (known as the Control Period Demand or CPD) and an indication of when controllable load (predominantly domestic electric water cylinders) is being controlled. On average, an individual water cylinder will be controlled for 40-50% of the daily and year-to-date Control Period hours.
