Update 2 - Storm-Related Power Outages: 22 July 2017, 4:00pm

22 July 2017
Severe weather has caused power outages on the Aurora Energy network in Dunedin, Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes. Our crews have worked hard in difficult conditions to get power back on to most customers affected.

In some areas, access to carry out repairs is being prevented by flooding and land slips. We thank customers for their patience while we work to restore power to remaining customers.

Dunedin

We currently have around 60 customers without power in Dunedin.

  • 37 customers remain without power in Leith Valley Road as land slips are hampering access. Repair crews are in attendance with civil contractors to assess the situation.
  • Power has been turned off to 21 properties in Otokia and Mclaren Gully Roads in Henley for safety. The area is inaccessible due to severe flooding.
  • Power has been restored to all affected customers in Allanton and Momona, except in Bruce Road, Momona. Repair crews are in attendance there and power is expected to be restored by around 5:00pm tonight.
  • Power was restored to all affected customers in Old Brighton Road, Green Island at 1:00pm this afternoon.
  • One customer in Blanket Bay remains without power as land slips are hampering access. Repair crews are assessing the situation.
  • Power has been restored to all 40 affected customers on Bush Road in Green Island.
Central Otago / Queenstown Lakes

Power has been restored to customers in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes region affected by storm conditions.

  • All power has been restored to customers in the Fruitlands and Millers Flat area except one, where crews are unable to access due to heavy snow.
  • All power has been restored to customers in Cardrona Valley after a tree has downed a power line.
Keep safe

Severe weather looks to be slowly improving, but customers should still be ready for the possibility of further power outages. We understand the inconvenience that service interruptions cause and we will be working hard to restore power to affected customers as soon as is safely possible. The safety of the public and line crews is of primary importance at all times.

People should be prepared for the possibility of electricity-related hazards and unplanned power outages, in particular:

  • Always keep well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and treat them as live at all times
  • Watch out for falling tree branches as these can cause damage to power lines
  • If a power outage occurs, switch appliances off at the wall to avoid possible damage to electrical appliances when power is restored Be prepared for power outages.

Make sure you have adequate food supplies, warm clothing and bedding, torch and spare batteries, battery radio and an alternative source of heating and cooking.

People using medical equipment that relies on electricity should ensure they are prepared for power disruptions and if there is an immediate health threat, contact their health provider or call 111.
