Alter your existing connection

In the world of electricity, increasing or decreasing your power supply, replacing your mains, service lines or putting in a new switchboard are called an alteration.

Altering your connection to the Aurora Energy network

  1. 1
    Contact your electrician
  2. 2
    Appoint an Approved Network Contractor
  3. 3
Your approved contractor starts the job
  4. 4
Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened
Step 1/4

Contact your electrician

  • 1 Contact your electrician
  • 2 Appoint an Approved Network Contractor
  • 3 Your approved contractor starts the job
  • 4 Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened

A standard home operates on about 230 volts. You might require more than this if you’ve installed some machinery or appliance that requires more power to run.

Or maybe you’ve added alternative sources of power, like gas or solar panels, so you want to reduce the amount of power you draw from the network.

Either way, we can help and the process is similar to a new connection.

You need to speak to a registered electrician and provide them with some important information before you apply to get connected to the Aurora Energy network.

The information your electrician may need

  1. Your contact details, including your email address so we (Aurora Energy) can give you progress updates
  2. Your electricity retailer (who you pay your power bill to)
  3. Current postal address, so we can send you paperwork if needed
  4. Your address, or where the alteration to the network is to be made
  5. Connection use – for example a new sauna

Your responsibilities

Engage a registered electrician and provide them with the details of your new connection request

Your electrician's responsibilities

They will request information from you to begin the connection process

Step 2/4

Appoint an Approved Network Contractor

  • 1 Contact your electrician
  • 2 Appoint an Approved Network Contractor
  • 3 Your approved contractor starts the job
  • 4 Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened

When there is existing power supply from our network to your property boundary, connecting to the network is straightfoward.

Your electrician will register your request for a new connection with an Approved Contractor (the people authorised by us to work on our network).

The Approved Network Contractor will review what's required and send a quote to you to approve.

Once you've accepted the quote, the Approved Contractor will submit an application to alter the connection to our network.

That's when we (Aurora Energy) get involved. You'll get an email from us to say we've received the application. Your electrician, Authorised Network Contractor, Authorised Network Inspector and your electricity retailer will also be notified.

You'll get another email from us when the application has been approved (this means the contractor can start work). This email will include your Installation Control Point (ICP) number – the number used to identify your electricity meter.

Your electrician's responsibilities

Provide connection information to Approved Network Contractor

Your responsibilities

Approve quote and sign contract for the Approved Contractor

Approved Network Contractor responsibilities

Provide you with a quote and contract to undertake work. Once you approve this, they can complete the Network Connection application

Step 3/4

Your approved contractor starts the job

  • 1 Contact your electrician
  • 2 Appoint an Approved Network Contractor
  • 3 Your approved contractor starts the job
  • 4 Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened

You will receive notification that your request has been approved. The electrician, Authorised Network Contractor, Authorised Network Inspector and your electricity retailer will also be notified.

The Authorised Network Contractor can now carry out the work to alter your connection to the network.

Then either you or your electrician (on your behalf), can contact your retailer to get pre-approval for your new meter (if applicable) and for an Inspector to install and test it, or test the altered connection, whichever applies to the work done.

Your electrician's responsibilities

Make sure the mains are ready to be connected to the network

Contact your electricity retailer to approve the installation of your meter (if applicable)

Contact the Inspector to arrange a date and time to inspect the work and install and test the meter (if applicable)

Authorised Network Contractor's responsibilities

Carry out the work and let us (Aurora Energy) know once it’s done

Aurora Energy's responsibilities

Approve the application for the alteration of the connection to our network

Step 4/4

Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened

  • 1 Contact your electrician
  • 2 Appoint an Approved Network Contractor
  • 3 Your approved contractor starts the job
  • 4 Your new or altered connected will be tested and livened

We'll notify your retailer that the work is complete. Next, an Authorised Network Inspector and/or Metering Technican will install the meter, do the safety and compliance checks and liven your connection.

Once we've been informed the connection is live, we'll update you by email.

That's it! Everything is done! Your new connection or alternation is now complete.

Your responsibilities

Check the invoice against the original quote and contract agreement, then pay it

Your electrician's responsibilities

Book an Authorised Network Inspector to test and liven the connection

Issues Certificate of Compliance

Send you or your electrician an invoice for the works they carried out
